    DAY 1 Arrival to Ljubljana

Arrive to Ljubljana, visiting the old part of the city. The quaint, narrow streets along the left bank of the Ljubljanica River, with its medieval bridges, are reminiscent of Prague - without the crowds. The old town is dominated by the 16th century fortifications of Ljubljana Castle.

    Accommodation in Ljubljana.

    DAY 2 Buje - Groznjan - Motovun

Transfer to Buje, typical Istrian medieval town. Ride to the border of Slovenia. City of Momjan and its deserted castle surrounded by scarce villages and archaic churches offer some of the best views that can easily make you think you are somewhere in Tuscany. While riding on quiet paths devoid of traffic you will soon feel that time had stopped in these parts...the wine is still flowing, though. We stop in Groznjan, small old walled renaissance town on a hill, dated back to the beginning of the past millennium. It is known as a city of artists as almost every door leads to art studio or gallery. Todays final destination is city of Motovun situated on the top of the hill. Each summer Motovun hosts international film festival and attracts artists from all around the world. Damp Motovun forest creates favorable environment where truffles, a mysterious and unique mushroom, completely hidden underground, is found. Why not start a tour with a typical Istrian dinner?

Route takes us through old prehistoric Illyrian fortified settlements of Beram and Zminj. City of Porec, for centuries a part of Venetian republic, has an amazing pre-Byzantine basilica of bishop Euphrasus. On the way we stop in Vrsar, the surfing centre of Croatia, praised by Giacomo Casanova for the lovely women and excellent red wine. From there we ride along the coast and enter the Lim fjord cutting deep into the peninsula. We ascend up to Dvigrad's ghost castle and continue to Svetvincenat bustling one. The two will make a fine contrast. • FAQ

  •

  • How did TrekTrek become what it is?
The story had begun when a few seasoned travellers embarked on an expedition in Nepal. After months of hardships in the rough country, bound by trust and beauty, they envisioned their future. With wealth of worldwide experience in adventure travel they set out organizing tours to the world's remotest places (Tibet, Sahara, Patagonia...) With a little charisma and great vision they lured top adventure experts and Balkan researchers to their aid. Through time and with the experience from abroad the team engaged half of the company in local responsible adventure tourism at home in Slovenia and in the rest of the Balkans. After 10 years in business, they strive for excellence worldwide and are one of the finest adventure travel companies in the region.

What kind of accommodation is provided on my tour?
We keep our accommodation up to standard - quality hotels on prime locations in towns and villages. Only boutique hideaways with the right ambient and a certain "je n'sais quois" conform to our strict standards. On the other hand, certain mountain trips do include getaways deep in the nature high up in the Alps. To get far away and stay close to nature we sleep in huts that are basic, but clean. In some secluded and still untouched parts in the lowlands, where tradition is still alive and tourist infrastructure is on a family-owned base, we sleep in simple family run inns or rustic lodges - a perfect choice to meet warm and friendly people. At all times, we select the accommodation on the basis of right ambient, location and quality of service.

What kind of meals can I expect?
We believe that excellent food is one of the most significant things on the trip (especially because the owner embarked on a personal quest for the ideal blend of flavours). Not only does it concern your health and well-being it also opens a new gate to a different culture. Slovenian cuisine has strong Italian ties mixed with Mediterranean winds. Our food is always fresh, organic fusion food enriched with local farmer's dishes or completely made by old recipes of our grandmothers. We emphasize fabulous gourmet picnic lunches with various salads and fruits, seasoned with freshly picked herbs. Moreover, we never forget the joys of excellent wine and smells of musky vine cellars. Bon appetite! Dober tek!

Our guides keep to the standard of the founders of TrekTrek. They are all zealous world travellers, outdoor enthusiasts who share similar values and vision that of the company. They enjoy world in its unspoiled shape and are conscious about sustainable travel. Above all, they are educated experts from different spheres of life that take care about your safety and undergo every year's tests in first aid and safety conduct. On one side, they have the vast experience from leading expedition trips in Himalayas and Sahara and on the other, they live in the region and can give you the real insight on the culture and its people.

Do I need to carry any of my gear and luggage?
On our hiking trips, a small day pack with personal gear is enough. Only on our hut-2-hut more strenuous trip additional equipment and clothes needs to be carried. By giving us your personal and relevant medical information, you help us prepare in advance and also get the most from your adventure. Absolute confidence is guaranteed.

What are my responsibilities as a trip member?
A member is expected to be part of the group, because it is safer and more fun that way. Attention should be paid to our safety procedures and other guide's instructions. Group travel always requires some flexibility and understanding that all the needs of the group cannot be taken care at the same time. Above all, nature and local customs should be respected.

What about the phone, internet and ATM. Do I need traveller's checks?
Most of hotels or nearby restaurants have wireless internet. The mobile phones have good coverage in towns and villages and many times in nature. ATM machines are very frequent and the country is safe. Most of the shops, hotels and restaurants accept credit cards. (Visa, MasterCard).

New! CROATIA: Bike Istria - GUIDED

Charms of Istrian peninsula: enter and behold. From age of the Roman Empire the amphitheater of Pula and the basilica of Euphrasius in Porec endure the challenge of time. The medieval town of Rovinj is where Casanova drank his passions and sorrows of the Venetian republic. Up inland, amidst green hills, the old-walled hilltop towns defended against the Ottoman invasions and prayed to ancient frescoes still preserved in delightful tiny churches. Barons and dukes of yore would haunt the ruins of ghost castles, if it weren't for the sweet charms of the local people and their good ‘spirits'.

The roads of Istria are made for cycling. Genty steep, secluded and scenic, they take you on a history rollercoaster. From inland to the sea, you will taste truffles, olive oil and beautiful wine. TrekTrek especially tailored the trip to foster different fitness levels with optional loops and harder climbs - while still keeping to the whole story line. True, like Tuscany, but with a virgin character and a laid back note.
